---
Welcome to the vehicular version of a black-tie gala: this is a 2018 Ferrari 488 Spider dressed to impress in Nero Daytona WB 508 with an interior dipped in Cuoio 4609 and enough carbon fiber to make a McLaren Senna feel insecure. This convertible is not just a car. It is an exotic Italian sonnet written by a team of caffeinated engineers who clearly skipped mild and went straight for molto pazzo.
The 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 lurking behind your ears is not here to make friends. It cranks out a borderline-illegal 661 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque, launching you to 60 in roughly 3 seconds, which is about the time it takes to regret texting your ex. Top speed? A shade over 200 mph, provided your hair and common sense do not fly off first.
This car was not just specced. It was curated. Imagine someone went to Ferraris personalization catalog and said, Yes. All of it. Apple CarPlay? Check. Carbon everywhere? Yes, including the bridge and the dash. Yellow calipers? Because matching the yellow tachometer is fashionably necessary. Suspension lifter? Because speed bumps are not race-track-friendly.
Step inside and it feels like a Florentine leather workshop exploded in the best possible way. Cuoio leather covers the seats, the dash, the upper dash, the steering wheel, and even the parts of the car you did not know could be upholstered. Then there is the Cavallino stitched into the headrests like a proud prancing tattoo, which probably cost more than your last vacation.
This 488 Spider also speaks in stereo thanks to a Premium Hi-Fi system, which will promptly be ignored the moment you hear that V8 clear its throat. Still, for the brief moments you are not going full throttle, it is nice to hear Pavarotti through something other than the exhaust.
The Scuderia shields on the fenders are not just badges. They are declarations. They say, Yes, this is a real Ferrari, and yes, you probably should move over. Add the 20" forged diamond-cut wheels, and this thing looks ready to slap physics with a velvet glove.
Fuel economy is an emotional subject here. The EPA estimates 18 MPG combined, but let us be honest. If you are worried about fuel costs, you are missing the point. This is not a Prius. It is a statement, a missile, and a therapist all in one.
Total MSRP with options rang up to $352,225, which is about the price of a small house, or one very fancy cat. But can a house do zero to 60 in three seconds with your heart in your throat and your soul high-fiving your adrenal glands?
In conclusion, this 2018 Ferrari 488 Spider is a roofless rocket ship wearing a tuxedo, blending carbon fiber madness with Italian class. It is not for the faint of heart, the penny pinchers, or the slow lane. This is for the person who believes redlines are suggestions and life should be lived at 8,000 RPM.

Amazing Car
By c06768c9 | on Tuesday, February 28, 2023
We previously had a F360 F1 Spider and a 2020 Portofino. The 360 was too much of a toy and the delicious howl of the engine freaked my wife out whenever I got a little overly enthusiastic (lol). The Portofino was much more refined, including modern features such as BlueTooth and GPS Nav, but the look and ergonomics just weren't our cup of tea. And then we ran across the 2017 488 Spider. Blue Corsa with a black wrap treatment to the green house and engine covers, plus some discrete carbon fiber touches. She was flat-out gorgeous. But I still had to test drive her. The test did not take long. Ergonomics are superb. Forward and side visibility is excellent (Blind Side Warnings would still be very much appreciated though). The view of the hood sloping away and the raised fenders is intoxicating. And she is so refined. In automatic mode, with the manettino switch in "Sport" and "Bumpy Road" engaged, the transmission shifts smoothly, and if you drive her "normally" there are no surprises. The car can be totally effortless to drive. Want to set your hair on fire? Switch to "Race" and push the "Auto" button, placing the transmission into Flappy-Paddle mode, and hang on. The engine revs so quickly that it's had to avoid the rev limiter in 1st (almost impossible) or 2nd gears. Hit the rev limiter in third? Ease off the throttle and wipe the grin off your face. In 4th? Might as well just pull over and collect your speeding ticket! It all happens QUICK. Handling is rock steady, glued-to-the-ground confidence inspiring. The brakes are best described by someone who said, "If you stomp on the brakes, you'll think it had begun to rain, but the water on the windshield is actually the tears ripped off your eyeballs!". Bring your A-game with you if intend to take a 488 to its limits. Oh - and it has an automatic Formula 1 Drag Reduction system that knows "not" to activate if it senses that the roads might be icy. How cool is that? She's comfortable - I spent an entire day in her without so much as an itch. With the minimal center console, the interior really feels spacious. Compared to the claustrophobic Corvette C8, the 488's interior feels like an arena. The standard stereo is actually pretty decent. I can't see the value in paying an exorbitant amount for the JBL stereo upgrade (JBL? Really? C'mon Ferrari. You're kidding me, right?). The retractable rear window provides good wind protection when top-down, and with the top up, you can retract the window to listen to the engine (a sweet touch). Overall, it's quite a civil environment for a long trip too. Prior to the 488, the greatest GT I ever owned was an '03 Jaguar XKR Coupe. It may still be the best GT ever, but where the XKR was more GT than sports car, the 488 leans the opposite way. It is absolutely a GREAT sports car, but it's also a very suitable GT. How great a sports car is she? I don't know yet. Despite having raced some small roadsters years ago, none of them compared to the mass and power of the 488. I'll wait for a track day (and an INSTRUCTOR!) before I explore the limits of this fabulous car. Trust me: You definitely want one.…
